Martin Luther King scholarship event successful
On Jan. 11, over 200 people gathered at the Holiday Inn to honor Dr. Martin Luther King and to support the scholarship program founded in his name. The gathering is an annual one, which serves as a reunion of sorts for many and an opportunity to greet new faces. The diversity of the crowd reflects the fabric of our wonderful community.
This year, we were fortunate to have Mr. Devery Anderson as our keynote speaker. His talk was an informative reminder of why we clasp hands and sing “We Shall Overcome.” Our heartfelt thanks go to the man from Utah who chose to highlight our event.
Our committee would like to thank Helen Harris and Michelle Brown for entertaining us with their beautiful voices. Our appreciation to pastor’s Alice B. Hunter and Tommy Murray for the scriptures and prayers which grounded us in the purpose of the day. The Journal has consistently covered our banquets for which we are grateful.
We would especially like to recognize the Holiday Inn for going above and beyond in accommodating our event, our speaker and a large group of hungry people. The service, staff, facility and food are excellent!
Our banquet and scholarships would not be possible if not for the wonderful people who support them. We thank-you and we are sure our scholarship recipients thank-you also.
