Duffields Station seeks funds for historic building
Duffields Station, located in the unincorporated hamlet of Duffields is the oldest surviving purpose-built combined freight and passenger rail station in the United States, constructed privately on private land in 1839.
Duffields Station Inc., a legal non-profit corporation incorporated in WV in 2003, acquired the station with donated funds in January 2007.
Our purpose is to fully restore the historic station (on the National Register of Historic Places since August 2007), and re-open it as a small local museum and tourist attraction.
In 2008 we put a new roof on the stone portion of the structure, and stabilized the stonework, with donated funds and a matching grant from the Division of Culture and History of West Virginia, amounting to $17,100 total.
Working with Mills Group, Inc. of Morgantown, WV, we now seek to complete a detailed plan for the full restoration of the station. The plan will cost $5200, and we are seeking funding for this from the Jefferson County Commission of WV currently (in October, 2009 we applied for a WV matching grant for this purpose, but the Historic Commission has notified us that they are out of funds currently).
We have also been offered the small piece of frontage land that was a former inholding on the station property by the current owner, who late husband had purchased it a tax auction years ago. We estimate this will cost $700.
If you would like to assist us, please send your donations to Duffields Station Inc. at PO Box 1806, Shepherdstown, WV USA 25443. All donations will be acknowledged in writing, and are tax-deductible.
