Camp kids explore careers
Every summer about 100 local students in kindergarten through 6th grades participate in the local Rise and Shine summer camp run through Jefferson County Schools.
The camp meets for two two-week sessions from 8:30 a.m. until noon, and each grade level covers a different theme.
Teachers Liza Jonczak and Stephanie Unger covered careers during the most recent two-week session in Shepherdstown. The kids visited various businesses where they learned what it was like to work as a police officer, a dentist, a baker, a radio broadcaster, a food service worker and a newspaper editor.
Chronicle Editor Dan Friend worked with the students on their own story about their summer camp experiences. Many offered their opinions about the camp experience, while others offered thoughts on what careers they might like to pursue.
Other local teachers who run the program are Leslie Boyd, Anna Schar, Pam Chambers and Nancy Cline, Michelle Webb and Anna Schar.
Here are the students’ thoughts on what they’ve been learning and what they want to do when they grow up:
“When I grow up, what I want to be is an inventor. I want to be an inventor because I want to make a time machine so I can go back to the time of 2009 so I can be in the news for popping up in the middle of the grocery store in a future-like car and buy a copy of the newspaper. The reason I’m going to do it is because it will be more than 20 years from now. Then I will invent a flying car, robot helpers, and an automatic food maker. I’ll keep on making new, cool stuff.”
