Rescuers loaded local resident Josh Bell into an ambulance last Sunday evening after he fell roughly 40 feet off of a cliff near Trough Road.

Shepherdstown Fire Chief Ross Morgan said Bell had been wearing safety equipment and was conscious and breathing after his fall, during which he sustained serious injuries. Bell was airlifted to Winchester Medical Center for treatment.

One witness at the scene said the accident occured while setting up ascending safety ropes.
