SHEPHERDSTOWN – Forty-five runners participated the annual HBS Remembering Michael 5K to Cure Cystic Fibrosis in Shepherdstown on Sept. 4, raising more than $3,000 in cash and in-kind contributions.

The 5K’s overall winner was Ryan McCarthy, who finished in 21 minutes and 32 seconds.

The first-place female was Misty Lowman with a time of 22 minutes and 33 seconds.

The annual race is held in honor of Michael Hendrick, a dedicated employee and inspirational friend of Brett Hersh, owner of Hersh Business Services.

Michael died in June 2008 at age 35 after 20-plus years triumphing to live beyond the constraints of cystic fibrosis.

The 5K was followed by Team Faith’s annual Hot Monkey Chili Cook-off. The cook-off had 22 contestants and raised more than $4,500.

All proceeds from both events benefit research conducted by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
