Shepherd, Columbia alumnus to speak

MARTINSBURG – Robert A. Holmes, member of the Shepherd University graduating class of 1964 will be the featured speaker at the 33rd Dr. M. L. King Scholarship Dinner. The dinner will be held on Jan. 9, 2011 at the Martinsburg Holiday Inn.

Holmes may not have realized it at the time, but his political career started at the young age of 14. Holmes was one of four students to integrate Shepherdstown High School. He then went on to study at Shepherd University. He played sports and was involved with the student senate. After graduating from Shepherd he earned his Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University.

Holmes served for 34 years on the Georgia General Assembly. He has authored and edited many publications and books. He belongs to many organizations including the Shepherd University Foundation.

Tickets for the dinner cost $35 per person. The evening’s profits will help six local high school graduates pursue their college degrees.

The students can be from Jefferson, Berkeley or Morgan counties.
