SU football announces 11 students sign letters-of-intent

Shepherd University head football coach Monte Cater announced Thursday that 11 student-athletes have signed letters-of-intent to play football for the Rams in 2011.

Among the group are six from Maryland, two each from Virginia and West Virginia and one from Washington, DC.

Emmanuel Adetunji (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock), a defensive end, earned Washington Post honorable mention All-Met honors at Lake Braddock in 2010. He also gained second team All-State honors as a senior.

Darren Arndt (Martinsburg, W.Va/Martinsburg), a defensive end/tight end, lettered in football, basketball, and track at Martinsburg. A first team All-State selection, Arndt helped lead Martinsburg to the 2010 Class AAA state football title. He was named the Area Defensive Player of the Year. His father, Doug, played football for the Rams under legendary coach Walter Barr, while his brother, David, is a wide receiver for the Rams.

Damien Caison (Front Royal, Va./Warren County), a tight end/fullback, was a four-year letterwinner in football and basketball at Warren County. A four-time All-County selection at tight end, Caison gained All-District honors twice. He was a team captain for both the football and basketball teams.

Peter Collins (Columbia, Md./DeMatha), an offensive lineman, was a three-year letterwinner in football at DeMatha. He earned honorable mention All-State honors and was selected to play in the 2010 Chesapeake Bowl all-star game. A two-time All-WCAC selection, Collins was a member of the 2008 WCAC champion team.

Stephen Darden (Riverdale, Md./Potomac), a running back/outside linebacker,

lettered in football and track and field at Potomac. He earned Running Back of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year honors as a senior. Darden is a transfer from Elizabeth City State University.

Delonte Edwards (Washington, D.C./Ballou), a quarterback, was a four-year

letterwinner in football and track and field at Ballou. He was a member of the 2006 DCIAA champion team. Edwards gained Washington Pigskin Club All-Met and Washington Post second team All-Met honors. He was a two-time Washington Post first team All-DCIAA selection. Edwards had 268 completions for 4,453 yards and 54 touchdowns in his career. He also rushed 103 times for 916 yards and 10 scores.

Jake Kingston (Pasadena, Md./DeMatha) lettered in football and lacrosse at

DeMatha. Kingston, an honorable mention All-State selection, earned the DeMatha football Unsung Hero award. He also gained honorable mention WCAC All-Conference accolades.

Nick Lopez (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg), a defensive back/wide receiver,

lettered in football, basketball, and track at Martinsburg. He earned 2010 first team AAA All-State selection at defensive back as he recorded 51 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and seven interceptions. Lopez also gained second team All-Conference honors at wide receiver with 16 receptions for 383 yards and three touchdowns.

Daniel Newman (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock), a defensive tackle, helped lead Lake Braddock to back-to-back district and regional titles. Newman gained 2010 Virginia AAA Patriot All-District honors. He led the team in sacks his junior year as a backup.

Phillip Rhoden (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), a defensive back, was a first team

All-County selection for Long Reach. He was named Team MVP and was selected to participate in the Crab Bowl. Rhoden also participated in the Baltimore Touchdown Club Senior All-Star Football Classic.

Daniel Yarborough (Rosedale, Md./Calvert Hall), a defensive tackle, lettered in

football and wrestling at Calvert Hall. Yarborough earned First Team All-State honors and was named The Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year. Yarborough recorded 92 tackles (43 solo) in 2010 with three sacks and a forced fumble.
