Shepherdstown Middle School student Dakota Fowler is one of four grand prize winners of a regional Rotary Peace Cards Art Contest.
The contest was sponsored last fall by the 44 Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 7350, which covers central Pennsylvania, western Maryland and eastern West Virginia.
Students in middle schools throughout the region were invited to create art works that celebrated the theme of world peace.
Each of the grand prize students has received a $150 award, and their works have been made into note cards that are being sold by local Rotary clubs.
Fowler was presented with his award at the Feb. 8 breakfast meeting of the Shepherdstown Rotary Club.
Attending the meeting with him were his mother, Denise Fowler; Shepherdstown Middle School art teacher John Bonner; Shepherdstown Middle School Assistant Principal Rebecca Horn; and Deborah Hinkle, Jefferson County Middle Schools coordinator.
The proceeds from the sales of the note cards will be used to provide a scholarship to one of the Rotary organization’s Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. Rotary supports six such centers worldwide.
The note cards are available from the Shepherdstown Rotary Club for $10 per box. To place an order, contact Tom Trumble at 304-876-2161 or ttrumble@frontiernet.net.
