Area church holds memorial service for Buckles
CHARLES TOWN – Zion Episcopal Church will hold a Memorial Service for Frank Buckles, the last U.S. veteran of World War I, at 2 p.m. March 16.
The service was requested by Buckles’ daughter, Susannah Buckles Flanagan.
Buckles was a long-time member of Zion Church, and a resident of Jefferson County.
The service for Buckles will be based upon the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. The Rt. Rev. Michie Klusmeyer, Bishop of West Virginia, will officiate, and The Rev. Melanie McCarley, Buckles’ parish priest, will preach.
The O’Hurley’s General Store Band, one of Mr. Buckles’ favorite local musical groups, will play “Over There,” one of the most famous songs of World War I. The National Anthem will be sung by Ms. Rebecca Petretta. The organ will be played by Mr. David Miller. Hymns will include “For All the Saints” and “God of our Fathers.” Speakers will include Mr. Ken Buckles and Ms. Martha McIntosh.
A reception following the service will be held at the Charles Town Baptist Church, 211 E. Congress St.
