Studios to present one-day exhibit of sculptures, videos
To celebrate Earth Day 2011, Terrapin Neck Studios will present a one-day exhibit of recent sculptures by Martin Burke and videos by Andrew White. Both artists are graduating seniors from the Shepherd University Department of Contemporary Art and Theater.
Burke’s sculpture exhibit, “Altered Landscapes,” challenges the viewer to consider how their personal use of technological objects effects them and the world in which they live. Our obsession for the newest, fastest, widest, and smallest, makes our lives more convenient and comfortable, but at an environmental cost. Disposing technological objects often creates a stream of toxic waste that is reintroduced into the natural world, upon which we depend.
Video artist White, will present his latest works, titled “Violent Dreams,” that combine found video footage with an ambient audio track creating something that is entirely new. His videos raise questions about our existence, isolation as humans, and of hurtful experiences that leave us seeking meaning in life.
Meet artists at the Terrapin Neck studios, 1327 Terrapin Neck Rd., Shepherdstown. The reception and exhibition will be held on Saturday, April 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public.
