Members of the local community and Shepherdstown Men’s Club will host the 2011 Earth Day Celebration from noon to 9 p.m. Satruday at Mogran’s Grove Park.

Stephanie Unger, a co-founder of Earth Vibe Productions which organized the event, said the celebration began two years ago as a family-oriented community event featuring activities for children and adults and has since become a daylong music festival.

Earth Vibe Productions has worked along with the Men’s Club to plan the third year of activities.

Unger called the planning process “exciting” and said her event planning team hope to “help showcase (Morgan’s Grove) in the best way possible.”

Mike Austin, president of the Men’s Club, described organizing the Earth Day Celebration as “on-the-job training” and said the Men’s Club has been making efforts to better utilize Morgan’s Grove Park.

Austin said the Men’s Club was in interested in studying how the park supports hundreds of people for daylong events like Earth Day and saw this event as “great opportunity”

The Men’s Club has helped with the promotion of the event and plans to help provide volunteers for the day.

For its third year, Unger said the event will again feature activities for youth and adults.

Over 50 vendors are expected to attend. About 40 of the vendors will be selling crafts produced by artisans from the Shepherdstown area. Other vendors include environmental groups, activists and nonprofit organizations; like Shepherdstown’s local Audubon Society.

The event will also offer environmentally-themed activities for children, including relay races, and ” earth poetry” writing, and nature-themed presentations on things like birds and recycling.

Unger also said that Rivers Riders will provide a rock climbing wall for the event.

As in years past, local musical acts will perform at the festival. Twelve musical acts performing from the tri-sate area have been scheduled to perform.

Six food vendors will also be set up, offering everything from tacos to veggie wraps.

The event will also include a small farmer’s market, where attendees can purchase local and organic produce and flowers from the same vendors who populate Shepherdstown’s Farmer’s Market every weekend.

The event costs $10 to park and is free to all who bike or walk. The proceeds from the event will go the park and the live musical performers.

Unger also mentioned a walk to promote the 480 bike path which will begin the morning of the festival.

Those interested in participating can meet at Shepherdstown Middle School at 11 a.m. and walk over the Earth Day event at Morgan’s Grove.
