Shepherdstown Day Care 5K run set
The Shepherdstown Day Care will hold its 4th annual 5K Saturday, May 7, with a starting point at the Shepherdstown Train Station.
The event, which features a 5K and a kids fun run, will raise funds for the day care center.
“We’re hoping to raise about $2,000,” said Brett Basham, race co-organizer and parent representative on the SDC’s board.
The SDC’s 5K was the first run Heather Thorn, another co-organizer and parent representative, finished after having her daughter, who was only 5 months old at the time.
“Every dollar goes directly into the day care,” she said. “It should be a really fun event.”
The day care offers a sliding-scale fee system, so fundraisers supplement tuition based on individuals’ income.
“They try really hard to make tuition affordable,” Thorn said, whose daughter, now 3 and a half years old, is going through the day care’s programs alongside Basham’s daughter.
“The day care is the only day care in the Eastern Panhandle with a sliding fee scale,” Basham said.
So to make this fundraiser possible, Basham said they organized it at very little cost and had sponsors – like their biggest supporter, Morgan Academy – help out.
Participants can register on race day between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m. At the Shepherdstown Train Station on Audrey Egle Way or online at active.com. Organizers said they only need a handful more of runners to register to meet their fundraising goal.
The 5K begins at 9 a.m. Runners will begin at the Train Station, run along River Road, turn around and end back at the Train Station. There will be $250 for the top male and female finishers.
At around 9:45 a.m., a quarter-mile fun run for the kids will take them from the station to the Rumsey Monument and back.
