National Guard soldier dies in accident
CHARLESTON – A West Virginia Army National Guard soldier assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Kenova, W.Va., was fatally injured during training exercises at Fort Harrison, Mont.
Sgt. Francis Thomas Campion III, 31, suffered injuries while involved in airborne operations at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday July 10. Sgt. Campion was immediately transported to St. Peters hospital and then airlifted to Great Falls Benefit
Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
“On behalf of the men and women of the West Virginia National Guard I extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Sergeant Campion,” said Maj. Gen. James A. Hoyer, West Virginia adjutant general, in a statement. “Sergeant Campion was a patriot who died while serving his country proudly. His loss will be felt by the entire West Virginia National Guard.”
Campion was from Hollidaysburg, Pa. An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
