Blaze being investigated

By Staff | Aug 26, 2011

The Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department officials say an “indeterminate cause” prompted a fire at 3953 Shepherd Grade Rd. last week. No one was injured in the blaze.

Firefighter Daniel Henderson, among the first to respond on Aug. 18, said that the fire, which started in the rear of the two-story home, worked its way up to the attic. He said firefighters pulled back the ceiling, putting the fire out from above.

“They were able to save (the home,)” Henderson said, noting that the house was not completely destroyed.

Henderson added that no one was in the house when help arrived on scene.

“It was locked when we got there,” he said.

Other area departments responded to the call, which came in at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Henderson said SVFD, Sharpsburg Fire Department and EMS, Baker Heights Fire Department, Bedington Fire Department, Independent Fire Department and Bakerton Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Henderson said while the cause is undetermined, officials do not believe it to be suspicious.
