SU women soccer win games
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Freshman midfielder Kelsey Smith (York, PA/Central York) scored a pair of goals for the Rams, but host Millersville held on for a 3-2 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC women’s soccer action in the season opener for both schools on Sept. 1.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally by Smith at the 3:24 mark.
Millersville (1-0) took a 2-1 lead into halftime behind an unassisted goal by Niki Roberts at the 21:14 mark and free kick at the 33:11 mark from Allison Snyder.
Smith tied the game at 2-2 with a goal at the 64:48 mark, but Kelsey Mattola scored the game-winner on a pass from Taylor Suskie at the 80:58 mark.
Junior Tessa Jones recorded six saves in goal for the Rams.
Days later, the Rams’ Megan Tole scored in the 99th minute to lift Holy Family to a 2-1 overtime win over Shepherd in women’s soccer action at home on Saturday, Sept. 3.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead when senior midfielder Ashley Bryant scored on a header in the 27th minute of the game on an assist from freshman Kelsey Smith (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown).
Holy Family then tied the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute on a goal by Melissa Benson with an assist from Tole.
Shepherd goalkeeper Jones had six saves, while Rachel Dunkel had four saves for Holy Family.
Holy Family had a 9-3 edge in shots and corner kicks.
The Rams drop to 0-2 on the season and Holy Family improves to 1-1. Shepherd returned to action on Wednesday when they host Shippensburg for a 4 p.m. contest. No information was available by press time.
