Women’s soccer rallies past Malone

CANTON, Ohio Freshman defender Kelsey N. Smith (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) scored on a header off a corner kick by senior midfielder Ashley Bryant (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) in the 74th minute to lift Shepherd University to a 2-1 win over Malone in women’s soccer action at Malone on Saturday.

Malone took a 1-0 lead on a Jasmine Evans goal on an assist from Susanna Jonkka in the 23rd minute.

Shepherd tied the game in the 52nd minute when when sophomore forward Morgan Gabriel (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Holy Spirit) scored after playing a shot that freshman midfielder Lexi Vondrak (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) deflected off the crossbar and knocked it past Malone goalkeeper Angie Nutial.

Shepherd had a 15-14 edge in shots while Malone had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Tessa Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) had eight saves for the Rams, while Nutial had six saves for Malone.

Shepherd improves to 2-4 overall, while Malone drops to 0-4. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel Hood for a 5 p.m. contest.
