For the next week, Eastern Panhandle residents can get a taste of Appalachian history as they will have opportunities to indulge in events throughout the area to gain a better understanding of this state’s heritage.

And we at The Chronicle believe indulge one must.

The weekend kicks off with the Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival, and attendees can explore the wares of talented artisans of the region.

But, the week is chock full of events put on by Shepherd University’s Department of English.

The Appalachian Heritage Writer in Residence program was started in 1998 by the department and welcomes this year’s writer in residence, Ron Rash.

This year’s program has various activities, including the film “Appalachia: Power and Place” Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.; a writer’s master class on Wednesday, Sept. 28; and an Appalachian festival and concert to culminate the week’s festivities. Whether you are a native West Virginian born in the Appalachian hills or an Eastern Panhandle transplant, there will be something for everyone at these events. Be sure to go and absorb our region’s history.
