Shepherd football routs Seton Hill 64-7
Junior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) completed 18-of-27 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, while senior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) had 15 carries for a game-high 122 yards to lead Shepherd University to a 64-7 win over Seton Hill in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead when senior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) kicked a 27-yard field goal with 10:26 left in the first quarter.
Shepherd increased its lead to 10-0 when junior free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, Va./Edison) blocked Josh Cavalier’s punt and senior wide receiver Neal Hardie (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) picked it up and raced 35 yards for a score minutes later.
Shepherd took a 17-0 lead when Cooper connected with junior wide receiver Robert Byrd (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) on a 19-yard scoring strike with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
Dobratz added a 31-yard field goal with 3:17 left in the second quarter.
Cooper teamed with junior wide receiver Larry Lowe (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) on a 19-yard scoring pass with 1:07 left in the half to give the Rams a 27-0 lead going into the break.
Sophomore running back Mike Haynes (Midlothian, Va./Cloverhill) scored on a two-yard run with 10:57 left in the third quarter to up the lead to 34-0.
Dobratz tacked on his third field goal of the day with a 33-yarder with 4:00 left in the third quarter.
Sophomore running back Kenny Williams (Elgin, Ill./Eastern Illinois), who rushed for 118 yards on 10 carries, plunged one yard into the end zone with 13:53 left in the fourth quarter Rams a 44-0 advantage.
Sophomore defensive back DJ Scott (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) fielded a Seton Hill punt and raced 36 yards for a touchdown to increase the Shepherd lead to 51-0 with 11:54 remaining.
Redshirt-freshman running back Kevin Williams (Clinton, Md./Suitland) scored on a six-yard run with 8:26 left in the game before Seton Hill’s Jonathan Feagin scored on an 83-yard return on the ensuing kickoff to cut the deficit to 58-7.
Kevin Williams added an eight-yard scoring jaunt with 6:55 left in the game to complete the scoring.
Senior wide receiver Nikkolai Norrell (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) led all receivers with five catches for 96 yards. Jorge Valdovinos had four catches for 32 yards to lead the Griffins.
Shepherd accumulated 542 yards of total offense in the game with 304 rushing yards. The Rams limited the Griffins to 84 total offensive yards and set a new program single game record as the allowed -45 yards rushing.
Sophomore defensive lineman Robert Hayes (Sterling, Va./Park View) recorded six tackles, while senior outside linebacker Dominic Tolson (Greenbelt, Md./St. Pauls) had five tackles, an interception and a blocked punt. Senior cornerback Elijah Davis (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) paced the secondary with four pass breakups.
Sophomore defensive end Howard Jones (Woodbridge, Va./Freedom) and sophomore defensive lineman Mike Franklin (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) each had three tackles-for-loss for the Rams. Calvin Mason recorded a game-high eight tackles for Seton Hill.
Shepherd improves to 3-0, 1-0 in WVIAC play, while Seton Hill drops to 0-3, 0-1. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Charleston for a noon contest.
