Shepherd football downs U of Charleston
Junior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) completed 15-of-17 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore running back Kenny Williams (Elgin, Ill./Eastern Illinois) rushed six times for 88 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 59-10 win over University of Charleston in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead when senior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) kicked a 32-yard field goal with 8:35 left in the first quarter.
Charleston took a 7-3 lead when Maurice Leak teamed with Taylor Franz on a two-yard scoring pass minutes later. Puma Nuredini connected on a 38-yard field goal with 11:46 left in the second quarter to increase the Charleston lead to 10-3.
Kenny Williams bounced off the line, broke through a would-be tackler, and raced 42 yards for a touchdown with 9:00 left in the half to tie the game at 10-10.
Senior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard), who rushed for a game-high 104 yards on eight carries, ran six yards for a score with 6:14 left in the half to give the Rams a 17-10 advantage.
Kenny Williams added a 16-yard touchdown jaunt with 4:47 left in the half to increase the Shepherd lead to 24-10. Sophomore defensive back DJ Scott (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) raced 37 yards with a punt return for a touchdown to increase the Shepherd lead to 31-10 with 3:05 remaining.
Cooper found junior tight end John Frick (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard scoring pass with 25 seconds left in the half to up the Shepherd lead to 38-10.
Kenny Williams opened the second half scoring with a 16-yard touchdown scamper with 12:35 left in the third quarter.
Cooper connected with sophomore wide receiver Justin Ford (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) on a 48-yard scoring strike with 8:39 left in the third quarter to give the Ram a 52-10 advantage.
Redshirt-freshman running back Kevin Williams (Clinton, Md./Suitland) scored on a yard run with 13:31 left in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
Leak hit on 11-of-22 passes for 99 yards for the Golden Eagles.
Jordan Roberts rushed for 101 yards on 13 carries to lead the Charleston ground attack.
Shepherd totaled 513 yards of total offense and the Rams limited Charleston to 226 total offensive yards.
Sophomore defensive lineman Robert Hayes (Sterling, Va./Park View) recorded a game-high six tackles, all solos. He had three tackles-for-loss. Junior free safety Corey Washington (Alexandria, Va./Edison) added five tackles (four solo) with two tackles-for-loss and a pass breakup. Rockford Stone had five tackles to lead Charleston.
Shepherd improves to 4-0, 2-0 in WVIAC play, while Charleston drops to 0-4, 0-2. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Concord for a 1 p.m. contest.
