Man pronounced dead after bridge jump
An unidentified male subject was pronounced dead on the scene Wednesday after area units responded to a bridge jumping incident just outside of Shepherdstown.
Sgt. R.L. Fletcher of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office said a call went out at 2:13 p.m. for a bridge jumper off of the James Rumsey Bridge, connecting Shepeherdstown to Sharpsburg, Md. The first unit was on the scene at 2:15 p.m.
The current took the body downstream, Fletcher said. Two Jefferson County Sheriffs officers had to get into a local’s personal boat to locate the body to then transport it back to the Potomac Valley Fire Department’s boat.
Fletcher said that because the bridge is in the Washington County, Md., jurisdiction, it will handle the investigation.
Dep. David Haugh of the Washington County Sheriffs Office had arrived on scene just before 3 p.m. and did not have information about the subject’s identity.
More details to come.
