The Shepherd University Foundation has announced the creation of the Monte Cater Silver Anniversary Endowed Football Scholarship in honor of Coach Monte Cater’s 25th anniversary as head coach of the Shepherd University football program. Funds will be used to provide financial assistance to student athletes involved in the football program.

The new scholarship, established by Shepherd alumni Al and Sara Lueck of Shepherdstown, pays homage to Coach Cater and the football program he has built, considered to be one of the best in NCAA Division II football. In his quarter-century career at Shepherd, Cater has successfully coached the Shepherd Rams to 12 WVIAC titles and an NCAA DII Final Four appearance in 2010. Cater has earned WVIAC Coach of the Year honors nine times.

The Luecks believe that Coach Cater’s calm yet firm demeanor and his coaching and leadership skills have had a positive impact on his players, to the benefit of the team and the university.

“What better way to honor this man and his legacy than with a gift to the fund created in his name?” the couple said in a press release.

The Luecks are noted for their support of the Shepherd football program, having established three other scholarships in support of football as well as being diehard fans who attend all Shepherd home games and many away games as well. Their goal in creating this fund is to continue to raise money for Shepherd athletics in addition to honoring Coach Cater’s silver anniversary.
