SU volleyball goes 1-1 at West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Shepherd University split a pair of volleyball matches in first day action at the 2011 Pepsi Bash at the Beach on Friday. The Rams dropped a 27-25, 25-20, 25-19 decision to host Palm Beach Atlantic, but rebounded with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-19 win over Johnson C. Smith.

Junior outside hitter Kasey Mercier (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) recorded nine kills, seven digs, and two aces against Palm Beach Atlantic (13-2).

Freshman defensive specialist Trish Leigh (Hagerstown, MD/Williamsport) had a team-high 10 digs, while junior setter Sara Michael (Winchester, VA/James Wood/HCC) had 17 assists and eight digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Melani Lewis (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) had 11 kills with a .444 attack percentage, while freshman middle hitter Kayla Motheral (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) posted nine kills with a match-best .562 attack percentage to pace the Rams against Johnson C. Smith (4-15).

Freshman setter Taylor Belella (Smithsburg, MD/Smithsburg) had a match-high 19 assists. Freshman right side Valerie Bour (Willoughby Hills, OH/Willoughby South) and freshman defensive specialist Kathleen Murphy (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) each had seven digs.

Shepherd moves to 11-7 on the season. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Carson-Newman at noon and Barry at 4 p.m. in final day play of the 2011 Pepsi Bash on the Beach.
