Gabriel, Smith lead SU to victory

Sophomore forward Morgan Gabriel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored three goals and freshman midfielder Kelsey J. Smith (York, PA/Central York) added two more to lead Shepherd University to a 6-1 win over Southern Virginia in women’s soccer action at Shepherd on Wednesday.

The Rams scored four goals in the first 13 minutes to take control of the game.

Senior defender Tiffany Banks (Harpers Ferry, WV/Jefferson) added a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder Kasey Canterbury (Berryville, VA/Clarke County) tallied a pair of assists, while senior forward Brianna Hines (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) and sophomore defender Kelsey Eagan (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Points) each had assists.

Shepherd had a 13-12 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Tessa Jones (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) (2 saves) and sophomore Elizabeth Wise (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) (2) combined for four saves for the Rams, while Briar Sands had a pair of saves for Southern Virginia.

Shepherd moves to 6-5-1 overall, while Southern Virginia falls to 4-9-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Seton Hill for a 1 p.m. contest.
