Locals donate Civil War-scene painting
James and Mary Holland, of Shepherdstown, recently donated a copy of the painting “General Robert E. Lee Returning to his Men on Traveller after the Surrender at Appomattox,” to the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University.
James Holland is a professor emeritus of history at Shepherd, who taught in Shepherd’s department of history from 1971 to 2004.
The painting is on display in the front parlor of the center, located on King Street in Shepherdstown.
“This highly evocative painting, inspired by contemporary eyewitness accounts, depicts General Robert E. Lee on Traveller meeting his men immediately following his surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia,” Holland said in a release. “It is a fine and important painting.”
Holland said he donated the painting because he wanted to keep it close to home and support the local university.
