SU Rams fall in overtime to Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON – Adam Neugebauer completed 41-of-66 yards for 412 yards and six touchdowns to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 45-44 win over Shepherd University in overtime in WVIAC football action at Cebe Ross Field on Saturday.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard touchdown scamper by sophomore running back Mike Haynes (Midlothian, Va./Cloverhill) with 7:12 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Eric Dobratz (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) added the extra point. The scored was set up by an interception by senior outside linebacker Maurice Perry (Dumfries, Va./Gar-Field).

The Bobcats answered back minutes later on a 21-yard field goal by Philip Warner to cut the lead to 7-3.

Neugebauer hit Corey Williams on a six-yard scoring pass with 12:13 to go in the second quarter to give the Bobcats a 9-7 lead. Sophomore defensive end Howard Jones (Woodbridge, Va./Freedom) blocked the extra point attempt.

Shepherd retook the lead at 14-9 when senior running back Tommy Addison (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) raced 59 yards for a score with 7:50 left in the second quarter.

West Virginia Wesleyan gained the lead back at 17-14 when Neugebauer teamed with Keith Dickens on a five-yard scoring pass with 3:59 left in the half. Neugebauer hit Stephen Campbell for the two-point conversion.

The Bobcats took a 24-14 lead into the break when Neugebauer connected on a 24-yard scoring strike with seven seconds left in the half.

Addison broke outside and went 14 yards for a score with 8:00 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 24-21.

Shepherd took a 28-24 lead when Cooper teamed with a wide open junior tight end John Frick (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) on a 67-yard scoring play with 6:47 left in the third quarter.

Shepherd stretched its lead to 35-24 when junior wide receiver Robert Byrd (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) ran down the sideline for a 29-yard scoring run with 1:45 left in the quarter.

Dobratz nailed a 21-yard field goal with with 8:16 left in the contest to up the lead to 38-24.

Neugebauer and Campbell combined on a 10-yard scoring play minutes later to cut the lead to 38-31.

Neugebauer teamed on a 12-yard scoring pass with to tie the game at 38-all with 3:30 remaining.

The Bobcats scored first in overtime on a 21-yard pass from Neugebauer to T.J. Benners. Philip Warner added what proved to be the winning point.

Shepherd answered back on a 20-yard pass from Cooper to Frick. Dobratz hit the extra point, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty was called. The Rams opted to go for two points and Addison was stopped short of the goal line.

Cooper completed 20-of-33 passes for 297 yards for the Rams.

Addison rushed 30 times for a game-high 153 yards.

Jon Meadows had 13 receptions for 149 yards for the Bobcats. Frick had three catches for 98 yards to lead the Rams.

Shepherd had 468 yards of total offense while Wesleyan had 426.

Shepherd falls to 4-2, 2-2 in WVIAC play, while West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 6-0, 3-0. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host West Liberty for Military Appreciation Day at noon.
