Cater and Barr lead Chalk Talk
Shepherd University football coach Monte Cater discussed the forthcoming homecoming game and last weekend’s victory over West Liberty at this week’s Chalk Talk luncheon.
This week’s lunch also featured former head coach Walter Barr, who returned to talk about SU football’s past and the present.
Cater reflected on the Shepherd win against West Liberty which was the first win, for the Ram’s following back-to-back losses against Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan.
Cater attributed the win in part to “success running the football.”
He also pointed to especially strong playing by Shepherd’s defense who managed to “put points on the board” for the Rams.
Cater said that Shepherd can expect a challenge from West Virginia State Saturday.
“They’re going to present us with the best speed so far,” he said.
Though Shepherd has a three year history of defeating West Virginia State, Cater said the Rams don’t plan to rest on their laurels.
“I know we’re going to have a challenge… our kids are going to be ready,'” he said.
Former head coach Walter Barr followed Cater Friday, offering a few anecdotes from his time at Shepherd.
Barr who coached from 1971 until 1985, discussed the growth of SU’s football program.
“People in the community have really rallied around the football program,” he said.
Barr congratulated Coach Cater and the team on its successes and said he hopes people understand how much the program’s success helps the university.
“Football has been really good for Shepherd,” he sad.
The Ram’s will play their homecoming match against West Virginia State, Saturday, Oct. 22 at noon at Ram Stadium.
