According to a BOLO alert dispatched in Jefferson County, a search is underway for two men who allegedly inquired about making entry into elementary schools in the county Friday.

A black male subject and a white man, both well-dressed, acted suspiciously in the area of Shepherdstown Elementary School and Blue Ridge Elementary School, according to the alert.

The men were approached by a crossing guard at Shepherdstown Elementary School, who told them they would not be able to access the school. The men inquired if there were any area schools that would allow them access before leaving the area, according to Lt. Tom Hansen of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

They were next seen in the circle outside Blue Ridge Elementary School, Hansen said, but left the area when they were approached by teachers.

According to Elaine Bobo, Berkeley County Schools director of communications and recruitment, schools in the county were placed under modified lockdown under the direction of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department, due to the “suspicious activity in Jefferson County.” School dismissal in Berkeley County will be at its normal time.

Jefferson County Schools were never on lockdown, according to Susan Wall, Jefferson County Schools superintendent. Law enforcement informed the district of the car, but normal safety procedures were followed through the day.

Wall said the schools’ surveillance videos were reviewed, but no activity was observed.

Hansen said the search continues for the men.

“We have every deputy in the county looking for these guys,” Hansen said, adding that Loudoun County, Va., officers are also actively searching because of Blue Ridge Elementary School’s proximity to that county.
