January nature hike at Stauffer’s Marsh Preserve
SHEPHERDSTOWN — The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will offer a “First Day” nature hike at its Stauffer’s Marsh Nature Preserve in Berkeley County on Jan. 1.
The hike will be led by local naturalist Steve Hartman. It will provide an opportunity to learn about the preserve’s plant life and the birds and other wildlife that frequent it in winter.
Participants will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the gravel parking area at the north end of the Preserve.
The trip will last about 2 1/2 hours, and involve about 1 1/2 miles of walking over flat ground.
There will be no fee, and anyone interested is invited to attend. This is intended as a family-friendly event, and children will be welcome. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. To register and get more information, go to www.potomacaudubon.org.
Those who participate should be sure to dress for the prevailing weather conditions and wear sturdy footwear. The Preserve does not have restrooms on site.
The hike will take place in the event of light precipitation but will be cancelled if there is heavy inclement weather.
The Stauffer’s Marsh Nature Preserve is located in Back Creek Valley in Berkeley County, 1/2 mile south of Shanghai, on the east side of Back Creek Valley Road (County Route 7).
