Lucy Q. Smith
Lucy Quaglio Smith went peacefully to her heavenly home on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, under the care of the staff at Canterbury, Shepherdstown.
Lucy was born at home, Aug. 31, 1930, in the small village of Bessemer in Berkeley County to Italian immigrants, Ilario “Eli” and Gertrude Paoli Quaglio.
Lucy attended St. Joseph School and was a life-long member of St. Joseph Church.
On Dec. 14, 1952, she married her handsome Navy man, Robert Eugene “Gene” Smith, who is now deceased.
Lucy is survived by her daughter, Shelley Smith Stull and husband, Lee; her beloved grandson, Robert Michael “Mike” Smith and wife, Kimberly; her greatest joy, great-grandson, Ethan Tyler; and step-grandson, Richard Stull and wife, Mallory. Lucy is also survived by her brother, Italo Quaglio; sisters, Ardella Kackley and Virginia M. Sine; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; grandson, Nicholas Stull; and brother, Americus.
Lucy was a spirited, hard worker who spent many hours trying to make things right. She worked feverishly on many local, state, and national political
She received Berkeley County Democrat of 2002; 2007 Camelot Award; and 2010 West Virginia Federation of Women Hall of Fame. She also received the medal of Distinguished West Virginian in 2010.
Lucy also was a member of numerous social organizations, Women of the Moose, VFW, Sons and Daughters of Italy, St. Joseph Alumni, and was one of the founding members of the local Democratic Women’s Group.
Lucy never hesitated to accept a challenge, and after years of working at Interwoven, Martinsburg Paper Box, and Patterson’s Drug Store, she went to work and retired from West Virginia Department of Highways. She was the first woman foreman in that department. Prior to her management position, she was an active labor union representative. In her late years, Lucy fought fiercely all of her medical challenges due to complications from Diabetes.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Thomas Gallagher celebrant. Interment prayers will be said at Rosedale Cemetery.
