SHEPHERDSTOWN – The Good Shepherd Caregivers is busy planning the annual Rubber Ducky Classic taking place this year on July 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Hundreds of little yellow ducks will be dropped into Town Run in front of McMurran Hall and will make their way toward The Little House, where they will be stopped by waiting netting.

The first three ducks reaching the end of the race will be the big prize winners. The owner of the first duck to cross the finish line will pocket $300, while the second place duck’s owner will win $200 and the third place duck’s owner will win $100. The duck to reach the finish line last will win its owner $50.

Every year, people gather along the sides of the run annually to watch for and cheer on their ducks.

Ticket sales to purchase a duck are ongoing, and can be made at Good Shepherd Interfaith Caregivers offices at 7311 Martinsburg Pike, Jefferson Security Bank and United Bank in Shepherdstown. Ducks can also be purchased the day of the event on German Street beginning around 3:30 p.m. Ticket costs are $5 per duck or a family of five ducks for $20.

All proceeds from the event are used to benefit Good Shepherd Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers’ medical equipment lending program, according to director Paula Marrone-Reese, who said music will accompany this year’s event.

“This year we are excited to have Eastern Panhandle West Virginia ROCKS rocking out our event, so come with your best hide and seek skills to find those rocks any time after 12 noon,” Reese said.

In addition to this program, Good Shepherd offers free volunteer services including transportation, visiting, reassurance calls, yard work, medical equipment loans and fix-it projects to the senior and/or disabled citizens of Jefferson County.

The Good Shepherd Caregivers strive to provide informal volunteer caregiving to home-based older or disabled Jefferson County residents. Their goal is to promote independence, dignity, security and quality of life among elderly, disabled, frail and homebound residents of our county, regardless of income or family circumstances.

The annual Rubber Ducky Classic will help ensure continued services in the upcoming year.
