CHARLES TOWN — Suzanne Offutt, former principal at Shepherdstown Elementary School, addressed the Board of Education Monday evening. Offutt spoke about a pilot program she has been assisting with at the elementary school, along with Dr. Ann Murtaugh and Taylor Carroll, recent Shepherd University graduate. The program, using the “Mind Up” curriculum, was tested on three kindergarten classes to help foster social and emotional awareness and increase academic success. Offutt shared the success of the program and indicated it will expand at Shepherdstown Elementary next year. Dr. Bondy Shay Gibson, board superintendent, indicated the curriculum has been purchased and will be used at other schools as well.
