SHEPHERDSTOWN – Once again, Brown’s Tire, Towing & Auto Care Center in Shepherdstown will be the only repair shop in West Virginia to take part in the national Brakes for Breasts campaign.

Brakes for Breasts is hosted each October, as independent repair facilities across the country band together to raise funds for cancer research, specifically through the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund.

The locally owned and operated shop in Shepherdstown is proud to participate once again, joining nearly 200 other repair shops across the nation during the month of October. The fundraiser has the shops giving away free brake pads or shoes, with the customer paying only for the labor and any other necessary parts. Ten percent of those proceeds go to the fundraiser.

Developed by Leigh Anne Best and Laura Frank, Brakes for Breasts initially raised about $10,000 from a handful of automotive maintenance shops in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. The numbers continue to increase, as more than 180 shops participated last year, raising over $1,000,000.

Maria Brown, who owns Brown’s Tire, Towing & Auto Center with her husband, Ronald, shared that she does not believe there is anyone who has not been touched in some way by breast cancer.

“I lost my best friend, Amy Dillow, to breast cancer. We also have many friends and many customers we know have been affected,” Maria said. “This is our second consecutive year doing the fundraiser,” Maria said. “Last year, we raised $1,023. We were happy to contribute that for our first year.”

The campaign kicks off today and goes through the end of the month.

Part of Brown’s mission statement says that as a business, is is here “to provide a positive, Christian, family atmosphere and encourage the achievement of individual growth, team/shop goals and ultimately return the investment in our community that has been invested in this establishment, by our community.”

The shop’s continued participating in the Brakes for Breasts campaign allows them to live up to that mission.

Those who wish to take advantage of the opportunity to give to the Brakes for Breasts cause are encouraged to schedule their brake work between now and Oct. 31. Brown’s Tire, Towing & Auto Center is located at 7735 Martinsburg Pike.
