Fitness and fun: Community encouraged to participate in unique fundraiser

By Tabitha Johnston - Chronicle Staff | Oct 29, 2021

SHEPHERDSTOWN — Looking for ways to do good and get fit at the same time? Then consider participating in the Friends of Shepherdstown Library’s Fall Fitness FUNdraiser!

The Friends of Shepherdstown Library are sponsoring the fundraiser to purchase a bicycle rack, so community members can “ride to read” at the new Shepherdstown Public Library, which is set to open during the summer of 2022. The fundraiser, according to FOSL member Tina Barton, will be taking place throughout the upcoming month.

“The Friends of Shepherdstown Library — FOSL — are promoting an event during the month of November, called ‘FOSL Fall Fitness FUNdraiser,'” said FOSL member Tina Barton.

“FOSL’s Fall Fitness FUNdraiser is a virtual ‘Choose your own Adventure Event,'” Barton said. “Anytime during the month of November, get active and pledge $1 — or any amount you choose — per minute or mile of activity, to fund a bicycle rack for the new library.”

According to Barton, the fundraiser can be even further personalized by participants.

“[You can] select any fitness activity you enjoy! Choose a beautiful fall day, gather family and friends, get out on a run, hike or bike ride; do some yoga or yard work; or take a kayak out to the river,” Barton said. “All ages are welcome to participate.”

Along with doing good and getting some exercise, participants can also look forward to potentially winning a gift certificate to a local business. All participants will be entered into the raffle drawings for the gift certificates. The grand prize raffle item will be a 2022 four-person tubing trip with River and Trail Outfitters, according to FOSL’s website.

To participate, community members can simply plan their activity and pledge amount, after which they can fill out a pledge from available on FOSL’s website. The pledge form can be dropped off with its accompanying donation at the Shepherdstown Public Library Annex in the War Memorial Building, which is open, Mondays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Checks should be made payable to FOSL.

Those who would like to earn an extra raffle entry and encourage others in the community to participate in the fundraiser can do so on social media by tagging a photo of the Fall Fitness FUNdraiser activity they participated in with, #FOSLFitnessFun.
