SHEPHERDSTOWN — Daisy Girl Scout Troop 15099, which meets in Shepherdstown, brought many smiles to the faces of residents at Canterbury Center this week, as they delivered 60 homemade valentines with chocolate candies attached, to be given to a number of the nursing home’s recipients.

According to troop leader Angelina Gray, the troop members decided to purchase the chocolates to go with their homemade valentines with their Girl Scout cookie fundraising proceeds.

“Shepherdstown’s Girl Scout Daisy Troop 15099 recently participated in a national Girl Scouts service project, called ‘Cupid Crew,'” Gray said. “Our troop of 12 girls made homemade valentines for all 60 residents at the local Shepherdstown Canterbury Center nursing home. They used their cookie money to purchase chocolates to include with every handwritten, homemade valentine.

“This was a big effort, as these girls are still learning how to read and write!” Gray said. “They also donated 30 boxes of cookies for the entire staff at the nursing home, to show their appreciation for all their hard work.

“This “Cupid Crew” worked hard to show and share love, following part of the Girl Scout Law which says that they are to “make the world a better place,” Gray said, mentioning the project unexpectedly resulted in more attention than what was simply received from the valentine recipients. “[Our troop and its service project was] featured on the Girl Scouts of the USA, as well as the Girl Scouts of the nations capital social media pages.”

According to Gray, the funding for the chocolate and cookie donations came directly from the troop’s work selling Girl Scout cookies over the past couple of months. The troop members accepted orders made in advance for their cookies, along with selling a number of boxes of cookies at “cookie booths” in front of the Shepherdstown Public Library, during some weekends.

“The girls have worked so hard, not only on the cookie sales, but on the design and creation of the valentines,” Gray said.

Daisy Girl Scout Troop 15099 meets at Trinity Episcopal Church and is always looking for additional members. The Daisy age group is made up of those in kindergarten and first grade, although Gray has said that girls of all ages may contact her about Girl Scout membership.
