An artful weekend: Memorial Day weekenders take advantage of local exhibitions
Tracey Donnelly Franklin points out a smoke canister she found on the ground at a military training site in one of her bird sculptures, on Saturday afternoon. All of her bird sculptures were used to "reincarnate" objects she had found at the site, including grenade pins, exploded car pieces and bullet casings. About 100 art enthusiasts attended the "packed" reception for the three-day art show in Evolve on Friday night, during which Franklin sold 14 oil paintings and two sculptures, created throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Nancy and Chris Ankner, of New York City, view a work of art together in “The Craftivist: Art and Essays by Carol Williams” show in the War Memorial Building on Saturday afternoon. The couple made the weekend trip to visit Antietam Battlefield and attend Memorial Day festivities in Sharpsburg, Md., but the self-proclaimed “foodies” made the trek across the James Rumsey Bridge on more than one day, to take advantage of Shepherdstown’s many well-rated restaurants.
Shepherdstown resident Linus Bicker and his dog, Penny, stand by the "reincarnated" bird sculpture he and his wife, who met in the U.S. Army, purchased from Tracey Donnelly Franklin in Evolve Saturday afternoon.
Washington, D.C. residents Lianna Quetel, right, and Brian Falkowski view art in "The Craftivist: Art and Essays by Carol Williams" exhibit in the War Memorial Building on Saturday afternoon. According to Quetel, this was one of many visits the couple has made to Shepherdstown over the years.
