SHEPHERDSTOWN — On Thursday, Shepherdstown officially became home to a new eatery at 104 East German Street, MJ’s on German Deli Cafe.
After working in the hospitality business for around 20 years, it was clear that Melissa Vitari and Chef Jordan Gainer were passionate about serving others. But it was hard for them to work the long hours that kind of business required, while also prioritizing caring for their five children. So, when they saw the opportunity to open an eatery in Shepherdstown, they decided to take a chance on opening their own small business.
MJ’s on German Deli Cafe is focusing on making artisan breakfast and lunch deli sandwiches, salads, smoothies, juices and freshly brewed coffee. By partnering with multiple small businesses within the community, including Bolivar Bread Bakery and Black Dog Coffee, MJ’s has made an effort to offer high quality products to customers, while also supporting local businesses. These partnerships have helped build their reputation, as they support one another.
“They are so supportive, and they really care, not only about their product, but [also] about us and how things are going for us,” Vitari said. “They call and check in. they make sure that we have what we need, and they’ve just been super supportive.”
The menu isn’t the only thing that makes MJ’s stand out. According to its owners, the cafe is also a great addition to the Shepherdstown restaurant scene, due to the sense of community being built within its walls and the Vitari’s and Gainers’ passion for what they do.
“MJ’s is unique and special because of the passion that Jordan has for food,” Vitari said. “He really puts everything he has into each little sandwich, and you can see him [doing just that]. We have an open kitchen here and he stands there looking at you waiting to see your first bite.”
Not only have Vitari and Gainer received support from local businesses, but they have also put together a great team to help ensure they’re offering good customer service.
“We have had the best luck finding staff. It’s been really outstanding,” Vitari said. “It just feels like everybody is really in a positive mindset. They want to be part of a team effort.”
The couple noted their appreciation, not only for the support they have received from other local business owners, but also from the Shepherdstown community in general. Ideally, they would like to see their new restaurant become a gathering place, both for locals and visitors alike.
“Thanks to everybody that’s coming and joined us here!” Gainer said. “The town of Shepherdstown has been so awesome while we’re getting up and running, being patient, and just understanding now how hard it is to open a restaurant. Melissa and I continually make changes or put new procedures in place, so the only way to go is up.”
MJ’s on German Deli Cafe is open every day of the week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some vegan and vegetarian food and drink options are available.
