SHEPHERDSTOWN — Staff members at the Shepherdstown Public Library are not only excited about its new location, but also about all of the programs that are taking place and have been newly created to attract more community members, including the “Sip and Stitch” program.
Youth Services Director Tish Wiggs came up with the idea for Sip and Stitch, which is an opportunity for community members to come together to work on craft projects, while talking with fellow members of the community.
After only having one gathering so far for the program, it proved to be a hit — so much so that the program is expanding with additional dates.
“People were excited about it. At first, our idea was needlework, like crocheting and such. Then, we said it really didn’t matter what you were doing,” said Adult Services librarian Addison Reese. “Tish was cutting out crafts for the story time while she was there, so it is about doing something with your hands and meeting with other people and being able to sit and talk with them while you work on something.”
Because of the size of the old library being small, staff members at the new Shepherdstown Public Library are loving being able to have so much space for the community to use and gather in.
Right now, Sip and Stitch is taking place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every other Friday, specifically on Feb. 10 and 24 this month. All ages are welcome to join.
“Already, there is enough interest that we will probably end up doing it each week eventually,” Reese said. “There is so much going on here. We are trying to really target teenagers and the other groups that sometimes get left out of the story times and things like that.”
She added that responses to programs, in general, have been positive.
“Pretty much, if someone comes in and says they are willing to teach a class, then we are like, ‘Great! Come in and find a time slot, and we can work with that,”’ Reese said.
