Shepherd University to host jazz concert featuring guest artist Kevin Woods tonight
SHEPHERDSTOWN — Tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Frank Arts Center, the Shepherd University School of Music will present an exciting night of jazz featuring special guest artist Kevin Woods with the Shepherd Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Kurtis Adams.
Woods has been a member of award-winning and nationally touring musical groups and has performed at numerous national and international festivals. He has been featured in both Downbeat and Jazziz magazines. In 2007, he participated in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead residency at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Woods has six recordings as a leader. He has given clinics and performances at numerous public schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and has served as an adjudicator and clinician for many jazz festivals.
Currently, Woods lives in Bellingham, Wash., where he is quickly emerging as one of the most melodic and emotive voices in improvised music in the Northwest. His passion for both performance and education has put him in demand as a leader and a sideman, as well as a composer, arranger and clinician.
Woods serves as director of jazz studies at Western Washington University. He leads the Kevin Woods Quartet, Trio Linguae and co-leads the Malmo, Sweden-based Woods/Axelsson Quartet.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for general admission; $10 for Shepherd employees, alumni, senior citizens, active-duty military and students aged 18 and under; and free for Shepherd students with a valid Rambler ID. Tickets can be purchased in advance at shepherdrams.universitytickets.com/w/?cid=187.
