SHEPHERDSTOWN — For the past 28 years, Megan Webber has been selling cut flowers and plants from her farm, at the Shepherdstown Farmers Market. And this year will be no different.

On the opening day of the Shepherdstown Farmers Market’s outdoor season this past Sunday morning, Webber could be seen wrapping up the stems of a bouquet purchased by Margaret Kline and Josh Lawson, of Sharpsburg, Md.

“I just love it!” Kline said about the market, which the couple has visited several times in the past. “I love shopping local and I love that they have this. They have a lot of good stuff!”

As the couple made their way on to the next stand, Webber reflected on her experience selling at Shepherdstown Farmers Market over the years.

“I’ve always sold cut flowers. I sell a lot more cut flowers than I used to, and I sell plants, also,” Webber said, noting she places a strong emphasis on cultivating native plants and plants that are of use to pollinators. “I’ll have different plants to attract hummingbirds, plants for butterflies, native plants, that kind of thing. Things that I want to grow in my garden, I’m going to sell to my customers. These are my favorite plants and you need these in your garden — that’s the way I look at it!

“Flowers really do bring me joy, and I want to share that,” Webber said. “They’re good for your mental health! There are actually known studies that just looking at flowers [and] being around flowers can actually boost your mental health. They’re good for you! I like to bring people joy. Life is hard and we all need a little joy in our lives. It inspires me to keep growing.”

According to Webber, she has been farming flowers for 29 years — all but one of which she has sold them at the Shepherdstown Farmers Market.

“I used to do a little market in Frederick, but this was one of the first markets that I landed in when I started farming,” Webber said. “I just never saw a reason to leave.”

While Webber, at one point, kept busy selling flowers at markets on both days of the weekend and at least one weekday, she has since stepped back from all of them, apart from the one in Shepherdstown. One reason for this, is her farm’s close proximity to Shepherdstown, being only a 10-minute drive away in Sharpsburg, Md. But that is far from the only reason.

“Because this town is so wonderful — that is the honest truth!” Webber said. “This town takes good care of me. I have a lot of friends here. Customers come back — unlike with some markets, there are people here that show up week-after-week, all season long.

“There’s a lot of support in this town for farmers, and it’s definitely kept me coming back. There’s enough business here for me to support myself on,” Webber said. “I’ve been here so long, that I have people that have been buying from me for the entire 28 years — I’ve watched their kids grow up! It’s definitely a community that I want to be involved with. I love this town.”
