SHEPHERDSTOWN — The late Swedish film director and screenwriter Ingmar Bergman once said, “Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.”
That deep, moving connection inspired by film will be felt in Trinity Episcopal Church on Jan. 26 at 3 p.m., during a concert performed by the Two River String Quartet. The concert will be the first one of the new year, in the Friends of Music calendar of events.
“Join us as our Two Rivers String Quartet brings movie magic to life,” said Friends of Music representative Peter Smith. “Enjoy iconic film scores, soundtracks and unusual pieces that capture the essence of cinematic moments — a perfect blend of Hollywood and harmony.”
“Matinee Magic” will bring to mind six beloved movies from the Silver Screen: Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film, “Little Women,” which featured the third movement in Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 8 in B flat major; the Vietnam War film from 1986, “Platooon,” which featured the second movement of Samuel Barber’s String Quartet, Op. 11; the 2016 science fiction drama, “Arrival,” which featured Max Richter’s piece “On the Nature of Daylight”; the 2009 drama starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., “The Soloist,” which featured the third movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 in A minor; the 1996 Czech drama film, “Kolja,” which featured the second movement of Antonin Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 in F major; and Academy Award for Best Music-winning 2001 fantasy film, ” The Fellowship of the Ring,” which ended with a particularly moving piece by composer Howard Shore, “The Breaking of the Fellowship.”
With only one performance being given of the concert, film and music lovers alike are encouraged to purchase tickets in-advance, rather than trying to purchase one at-the-door. Tickets cost $35 per-person. They may be purchased at www.friendswv.org or by mail (FOM, P.O. Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443). Visa and Master Card are both accepted.
Smith noted that attendees will likely recognize Two River String Quartet’s members from many of the other Friends of Music concerts held throughout the year.
“The quartet is composed of four of the finest members of our Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra: Heather Austin-Stone, who plays the violin; Petr Skopek, who plays the violin; Jason Diggs, who plays the viola; and Camilo Perez-Mejia, who plays the cello,” Smith said, mentioning that this concert falls in line with the Friends of Music mission, “to support and promote musical excellence” throughout the region.
