SHEPHERDSTOWN — Over the past two weeks, a local home decor business has held a pop-up shop in Evolve, featuring a variety of items to help customers refresh their homes for the spring.

The central theme for this pop-up shop was items revolving around citrus fruit, including garlands and wreaths made of greenery and lemons, an Italian tole chandelier ornamented with clementines and lemon-shaped rattan baskets.

“There’s so many beautiful things here!” said Shepherdstown resident Elise Baach, who is co-owner of Evolve. “Where do we start?”

Baach could be found walking around the shop with fellow Shepherdstown resident Kay Christy on Saturday afternoon.

“I love it! I hadn’t planned on shopping today,” Christy said, mentioning this was the first time she had shopped at Sand & Pine. “Now, I’m eyeballing all of it!”

According to Nancy Stevens, who was managing the pop-up shop on behalf of its owners — her four children, this pop-up shop was one of four or five that will be held in Evolve over the next year.

“We are trying to be here at least once every season!” Stevens said. “Doing it this many times a year allows us to change the look of our displays. We want to have new merchandise and new things for people to see, whenever they visit us.”

She noted that holding pop-up shops in Evolve has proven to be the perfect location for attracting business.

“This is a great space, in particular, for us to use,” Stevens said. “The foot traffic past it, along the main street, is wonderful. And you have a lot of new people coming in, because of all of the tourists that visit from out-of-town.”

The one challenge related to this spring sale, was the fact that temperatures were below freezing throughout its first week, which prevented potential customers from getting out and shopping.

“Unfortunately, our first week of this sale was super cold, which really affected business. We had customers who ran in to tell us they would be back at a later date, because it was just so cold! It was hard to stay out,” Stevens said. “Thankfully, they all came back this week, after the weather warmed up.”

Sand & Pine’s next sale, according to Stevens, will feature a woodland theme inspired by the “Eric & Eloise” books, which tell the story of the friendship between a hare named Eric and a fox named Eloise.

“We’ll have brass animal heads and bugs and lamps and so many other exciting items! I’ve already begun working on the window display,” Stevens, who spent years designing displays for retail companies, said.

Sand & Pine hopes to open its own brick-and-mortar location in the area, sometime in the near future. But until the ideal location has been found, the two-year-old business will continue to flourish, by operating through a variety of different sales avenues, including at pop-up shops, in other local businesses and on its website, https://www.sandandpine.co/.

“It’s certainly worthwhile for us to do this — there are a lot of people in this community who are really supportive of us,” Stevens said.
