SHEPHERDSTOWN — The 69th Annual Drama Desk Awards recently announced its full list of 2025 nominations, honoring the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-off Broadway theater. Actor Doug Harris received a nomination in the category of Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play for his performance in Chisa Hutchinson’s “Redeemed,” a play produced by the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF) at 59E59 Theaters in New York City from Sept. 15-Oct. 5, 2024.
“Redeemed” spins a story over the course of two prison visitations between Claire Yiang (Elizabeth Sun), a woman whose brother was murdered nine years ago, and Trevor Barlow (Doug Harris), the murderer. Having sent Yiang a letter begging for a visit, Barlow tries to prove he’s now a changed man thanks to the help of her brother’s ghost. Yiang must decide if Barlow is capable of redemption, or just attempting to impress the parole board.
CATF premiered “Redeemed” during its 2023 season and then produced the play in 2024, as part of 59E59’s AMPLIFY Festival, celebrating the work of Chisa Hutchinson. Both productions were directed by marcus d. harvey and featured actors Sun and Harris.
The 2025 Drama Desk Awards, co-hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess, will be held on June 1, 2025 at NYU Skirball Center. CATF staff, including Artistic Director Peggy McKowen and Managing Director Amy Wratchford, will represent the company at this special event. For more information, please visit dramadeskaward.com.
