SHEPHERDSTOWN — After a week-and-a-half of sanding, painting, installing light fixtures and building displays, Sand & Pine Co. opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Shepherdstown on Saturday.

The home decor business, which was established during the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2022, has sold its merchandise on its website and at a number of pop-up shops in the area. It was during one of the first pop-up shops the business held in Shepherdstown, when its owners began to envision what it would be like to run the store from a permanent brick-and-mortar location along German Street.

“I loved going to their pop-up shop,” said Shepherdstown resident Joy Lewis, mentioning she purchased items from their website, as well. “I love their price point and aesthetic. They’re the perfect fit for Shepherdstown.”

Lewis was one of the first people to make a visit to Sand & Pine Co., after it opened its doors to the public on Saturday. 141 West German Street, which originally served as a mercantile, has large windows and unique details that made it feel like the perfect home for the business’s finely curated home decor.

“I fell in love with the architecture of this building right away,” said Chloe Kissinger, of Martinsburg. “Sand & Pine has come home. We are so grateful to be a part of this community and this town.

“It feels so kismet,” Kissinger said. “Everything was meant to be. We have lighting fixtures that we forgot to measure and that just fit into the windows by two millimeters.”

Kissinger is one of the founders of the business, along with her sisters Maddie Humerick and Sidnie Flood and brother Drew Stevens. Their mother, Nancy Stevens, has played an instrumental role in running the business and designing its displays and, with the storefront, will continue to do so at a greater level. Her years of experience creating eye-catching window displays will continue to be put to good use, as will her warm presence inside of the store. Nancy will be managing the store on Wednesdays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Her children will then manage the store on the weekends, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“This whole week has felt like ‘the welcome of the neighbors.’ So many of the other store owners have come in to congratulate us,” Humerick, who lives in Leesburg, Va., said. “The support from the other business owners and the relationships we have here is so nice. It’s a wonderful place for our business to be able to call home.”

According to the sisters, the store’s merchandise will change on a seasonal basis, with the goal of having something of interest for everyone. The current merchandise includes a wide assortment of items that cannot be found anywhere else in the area, like brass moose heads inspired by the “Eric and Eloise” storybook series, French soap, woven bicycle baskets, hand-painted metal lemon garlands, pottery, wooden serving platters and stands and signature linen sprays, lotions and candles.

“It’s eclectic. We are not just a gift shop or nailed down to one specific style,” Humerick said. “We all like to shop as a family, ourselves, so we wanted to be able to offer that for other families and groups of customers, as well.”
