SHEPHERDSTOWN — This Thanksgiving, the entire community has been invited to come to Alma Bea from 12-3 p.m., for a free dinner.
Alma Bea restaurant owner Mary Ellen Diaz decided to hold the dinner this year, to fill a need in the community caused by recent actions of the federal government.
“Know someone affected by the government shutdown? Furloughed yourself? Looking for an opportunity to give back on Thanksgiving, or to share a community dinner and some connection? Alma Bea is opening its doors on Thanksgiving — not for our regular service, but to share the day with neighbors,” Diaz said, mentioning the dinner had also been developed with those potentially facing the loss of their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in mind, as a way to ensure everyone — regardless of financial situation — had a good meal to enjoy on the Thanksgiving.
The Thanksgiving dinner will also, Diaz indicated, provide a sense of togetherness for those who would otherwise be celebrating the holiday alone. Statistically, 91% of Americans observe the federal holiday, though as many as 17% of them do not have anyone to celebrate the holiday with, according to research published last year by the Pew Research Center.
“Wow — what a great gift and a great way to build community,” said Shepherdstown resident Carolyn Thomas, after learning about the dinner.
Fellow Shepherdstown resident Karen Fitzpatrick completely agree.
“What a heartwarming offering of kindness,” Fitzpatrick said.
Those who would like to help bring the dinner to life, either with their time or with their financial resources, are encouraged to reach out to Alma Bea at info.almabea@gmail.com or 304-870-2153.
“We’re looking for volunteers — to make dinner, slice turkey, serve food and beverages, slice pie, set up an activity table for kids, play music, donate their creativity to decorate tables and, crucially, help to clean up!” Diaz said, mentioning help is needed on Thanksgiving, as well as the week leading up to it. “Even if you have other plans on Thanksgiving, there are a lot of ways to help.”
Alma Bea is located at 202 East Washington Street in Shepherdstown. To learn more, follow its social media pages on Facebook and Instagram.
