Barbara Feldman, a nationally recognized martial arts instructor and owner of Blue Heron Martial and Healing Arts in Charles Town, will offer a new class on the “Fundamentals of Qigong and Tai Chi Chuan” beginning Jan. 4, 2012, at Harmony Healing Arts Center, 211 East New Street, Shepherdstown. The class is perfect for beginners or experienced practitioners of either discipline and fully accessible to the young, not-so-young and for people recovering from injuries. It will be held from 11 a.m. to noon each Wednesday for 11 weeks.

Qigong (or Chi-gung) is an ancient Chinese practice of cultivating and unifying mind, body and spirit. It does this through slow fluid movement and stillness in the body, balancing and nurturing the qi (chi) or energy and deep abdominal breathing techniques. The main purposes of qigong have been longevity, increased health and well-being, spiritual development, preventative and restorative medicine and martial ability.

Tai Chi Chuan has all of the benefits of qigong in addition to being a martial art. The requirements shared by Tai Chi and Qigong are few: the ability to relax the body, focus the mind, and practice regularly. The class is intended to provide the basics for a solid qigong practice and for developing the fundamentals of tai chi.

A professional educator with over 35 years experience teaching, Feldman has practiced the martial arts for 32 years and the healing arts for 28. She holds black belts in two styles of karate, including a 5th degree black belt in Ai Mute Shotokan.
