Community Club to Launch “Friends of Morgan’s Grove Park”

By Staff | Mar 14, 2012

The Shepherdstown Community Club (SCC) will hold the initial meeting of its “Friends of Morgan Grove Park” organization at 7 p.m. on Mar. 15 at the War Memorial Building. President Tom Huddleston explained that: “We are facing fast-moving and critical issues involving the future of the Park that can only be properly addressed if we have an adequate cross section of the community involved. The SCC takes its stewardship for Morgan’s Grove very seriously so the first step is to ensure that we fully understand people’s aspirations and concerns for the park. Area home owners, local businesses, those who enjoy the recreational features of the park, historians, naturalists, and non profit organizations that depend on it, all should have a voice. The group believes that this new entity will address this shortfall.” The Mar. 15 meeting agenda includes: discussion of the status of the Twin Oaks Subdivision request for a Conditional Use Permit – the subject of a public hearing by the Jefferson County Board of Zoning Appeals on Apr. 19; on-going arrangements with the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission for operation and maintenance of the park, plans for a community work day in conjunction with Shepherd University students on April 21, the 4th annual observance of “Earth Day” at the park on Apr. 26, and pursuit of plans to develop a permanent band shell in the Park, A substantial portion of the meeting time well be reserved for suggestions and comments from the meeting participants. The meeting will be open to the public, particularly any individuals or organizations who currently make use of the park or have an interest in it. Former SCC president Mike Austin commented that: “We have been kicking this can down the road for many years. We think it is a good idea whose time has come. But we want to make sure that while substantive issues get appropriate priority, involvement includes enjoyable social experiences as well. As often as possible, we will try to conduct our activities at the Park and mix business and pleasure in healthy portions.” For more information contact Tom Huddleston at (304) 267-0406 or Mike Austin at (304) 876-0598.
