Kindergarten sign-ups set
Kindergarten registration for Shepherdstown Elementary School will take place on Thursday, Mar. 22. Students will be divided according to their last name. Times are as follows: 9-10:30 a.m. for those with last names beginning with A-F; 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for those with last names beginning with G-L; 1-2 p.m. for students with last names beginning with M-R; and 2-3 p.m. for students with last names beginning with S-Z.
Speech, language and hearing screenings will be conduced at the time of registration.
A state certified birth certificate is required by State Law. Registering families are also required to bring a proof of residency and a social security card to registration.
A health screening is also required. Forms are available at local physician offices and the Jefferson County Board of Education office. Certain immunizations are required before a child can register. These include: four doses of DPT, with one dose after the fourth birthday; three doses of polio vaccine with one dose after the fourth birthday; two doses of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine with the first dose after the first birthday; two doses of Varicella (chickenpox) with first dose after the first birthday; three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine with the last dose after the age of six months; and a tuberculin test for out of state transfer students only which must be given within 30 days of entering school.
A child must be five years old before Sept. 1 to enter kindergarten. School policy allows admission of children born between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15 inclusive only if they meet eligibility requirements.
