Relic, which presents the work of three graduating seniors from Shepherd University’s Department of Contemporary Art and Theater is a one night only exhibition that will showcase three artists together at The Slant Factory, 202 East Liberty Street, Charles Town. Anne M. Cropper, Joshua S. Hawkins and Jessica Oberdick will each present their own body of work in a separate installation. The exhibit hours are 5 to 9 p.m on Friday, April 20.

Anne Cropper a BFA major concentrating in Photo and Digital Imagery creates work consisting of an installation of nests, which further examine her concepts of memory preservation and home. Cropper’s work titled Thoroughfare, focuses on the idea of “what’s left behind” after death and uses photographs printed on fabrics, which are then torn and woven with natural materials such as grasses and mud.

Joshua Hawkins will be presenting an interdisciplinary body of work titled Emergent Properties exploring the institutions of adolescent development and growth. His work employs found materials ranging from old cigarette boxes to bed sheets and wood, that come together to interpret our individual definitions of intimacy. His exploration begins with the earliest: the family then moves on to the adolescent relationships of friends and finally includes interpersonal relationships.

Jessica Oberdick’s work, titled Absolution is a presentation of largescale oil paintings focusing on biblical stories and themes. The stories are presented in a contemporary setting with modern characters as though happening today, however contain traditional Christian symbolism. Oberdick’s painterly style combines intense darks with highlighted bright coloration and gestural strokes that together form dramatic larger than life representational images.
