Aging Well Workshop set for May 15

The fourth annual Aging Well Workshop, cosponsored by Shepherd University’s Department of Social Work, will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The workshop, “Thinking Outside the Box,” is presented by the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services.

The Honorable Robert Edwin Roswall, of Huntington, is this year’s keynote speaker. Roswall is the new commissioner of the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services.

Workshop topics include “Playfully Aging,” “Creative Engagement Programs for Elders” and “70, the new 50 ‘I got a new attitude.”

Michael C. Patterson, an educator and gerontologist, is the plenary speaker.

He has produced and presented brain health workshops across the country as director of the award-winning Staying Sharp program.

Other presenters include Anthony Hyatt, a master trainer for the National Center for Creative Aging and an artist in residence for Georgetown University Hospital’s pediatric and cancer care programs; Will Perks, a masters-level social worker since 1986 who currently focuses on working with Hospice systems of service as a social worker and bereavement counselor; and Linda Zimmer, an actor, puppeteer and musician who created puppets for Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

Her work has been featured in The Washingtonian and Good Housekeeping magazines.

Registration for participants interested in obtaining CEUs is $30 and $10 without CEUs. Registration is due May 8.
