Rabies clinic set in Ranson
Rabies is viral disease that humans and animals can get if bitten or come in contact with saliva or nervous tissue of a rabid animal. If bitten, the disease spreads from the bite site through the nerves to the brain, ultimately causing death if not treated in a timely manner. Over 55,000 people die around the world each year from rabies. Raccoons, skunks and cats had the highest occurrence of rabies last year in a neighboring state.
Stay safe and follow these basic rules: Don’t approach unfamiliar animals, domestic or wild; don’t let pets roam freely outside; put outside trash in tight fitting trash cans; report any wild or domestic animals that seem to be acting strangely to authorities; and, vaccinate all pets to prevent rabies.
To help decrease the prevalence of rabies, the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County will have their annual spring Rabies Clinic on Saturday, April 28 at AAAA Self Storage in Ranson (next to Gowers) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dr. Mike Gallup, Blue Mountain Home Pet Care, will vaccinae dogs and cats over three months of age. All dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in carriers. There will be a secure, enclosed area available to safely vaccinate cats. The vaccination cost is $10 for each pet.
